Why iago wants to destroy othello
Secondly, which could be seen as the main reason behind his plot for Othellos downfall was the refusal of othello to give him the place of the lieutenant. It can be seen vividly in the drama that Iago was strenuously seeking for the place of the lieutenant as he writes letters to great people of the city for them to persuade Othello to appoint Iago as a lieutenant.
Othello rather brushes away all Iagos efforts and tells him that he has already chosen his lieutenant which was Cassio. Iago believed that Cassio did not deserve such a position because all he knew was bookish theories about war and that Cassio has never set foot on a battle field.
This enviness for Cassio and hate for Othellos decision makes Iago plot on how to destroy Othello. The Turks are sailing to attack Cyprus and, as Othello is known to be a superior commander, the Duke sends him to Cyprus to take command of the soldiers there and protect the island.
Iago convinces Roderigo that Cassio has been promoted to be the new governor of Cyprus, which means that Othello and Desdemona will soon be leaving the island. He tells Roderigo that, if he kills Cassio, Othello and Desdemona will have to stay in Cyprus longer, giving Roderigo time to make his moves on Desdemona. When Roderigo attacks Cassio, Cassio reacts quickly, draws his sword, and wounds Roderigo in self defence.
The moment Iago notices that Roderigo has failed to murder Cassio, he sneaks up behind Cassio and slashes his legs, hoping to kill his rival himself. But Cassio receives medical attention and survives both attacks. After Roderigo fails to murder Cassio, Iago arrives on the scene, pretending to be concerned for Cassio. Iago plays the role of devoted comrade so well that he angrily curses the man who hurt Cassio and calls out to others for aid. Act 5, scene 2 opens with Othello entering his bedroom to wake a sleeping Desdemona.
A life of giving oneself to narcissism and self-serving ends in evil. Iago defeats others to feel powerful. He is brilliant with manipulation and language. He fixes people with language, undoes them. He is angry, of course, because Othello has chosen Cassio over him -- jealous, bitter, enraged. He says, "I follow him to serve my turn upon him. He also says "I am not what I am. He grinds away persistently at the process. Roderigo enters, and Iago points him in Cassio's direction.
As Montano continues to suggest that something be said to Othello of Cassio's drinking problem, Cassio chases Roderigo across the stage, threatening to beat him. As Montano and others attempt to hold Cassio down, Cassio stabs Montano. Why did Iago ruin Othello? Category: fine art costume. Why did Othello kill himself? What is Iago jealous of?
