How do cowboys make coffee
A blue and white-speckled kettle? Yet cowboy coffee nonetheless has a lot of devotees. What gives? I decided to get educated and call an expert: a cowboy.
Rollins is a cowboy, chuckwagon cook expert, cookbook author, and coffee lover. In fact, with their absence of frilly creamers and flavored syrups, specialty coffee and cowboy coffee have more in common than you might assume. Intrigued by the idea that cowboy coffee could be more tolerable than what the average coffee person was used to drinking, I went to Joseph Rivera of Coffee Chemistry to see if there might be a scientific explanation for it.
Off the ranch, of course, cowboy coffee has a bad reputation. Which can also be a selling point. The eggshells, on the other hand, help coffee grounds sink to the bottom of the coffee pot at a faster rate.
Cowboys herd cattle, drive away strays, do rodeos, and a lot of other things. These activities can be physically challenging, hence, they need strong coffee to stay awake and boost their energy. Cowboys make coffee by putting coffee grounds in a pot full of water and bringing it almost to a boil 3 or just when the water started boiling.
Then, they use eggshells to help the grounds settle at the bottom of the pot. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Cowboy Coffee. Step 2 — Mix in the Eggshells. Step 3 — Toss It in the Pot.

How do cowboys make their coffee? In general, all coffee brewing is essentially the process of turning coffee beans into a beverage. While we are accustomed to our favorite brewing methods and preferences, there are varied methods one may use to create a great cup of coffee. And while the name may inspire visions of adventurers on the wild frontier living in buckskin tents, the method is used by people all over the world.
Cowboy coffee serves a variety of purposes and situations, from backwoods camping to trying something new with friends. During the warm summer you can let it cool a little longer. Coffee brews best just between degrees.
This is the biggest mistake, and what gives coffee its bitter taste. Coffee added to boiling water will burn. Its drinkable, but it taste terrible. After about 45 seconds add your coffee grounds. Many people will swear by two different grounds to add. Some say add very fine grounds, and others say use very coarse grounds. I've done it both ways with very similar results, but I feel coarse grounds have worked a little better for me.
The few times I've had a few little grounds in my cup is when I used fine grounds. Nothing crazy or off putting, but coffee with zero grounds is best. Stir the grounds in well, cover, and let the pot sit for 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes is up, stir the grounds again, because they will rise to the top as the coffee brews.
Let the coffee sit for another 2 minutes. This step is the most important step to keep grounds out of your coffee cup. The first option is the old trick to sprinkle a few drops of cold water into the pot.
I usually just add some cold water in the palm of my hand and flick it into the pot. This will cool the grounds and make them sink to the bottom. The second option is to slightly tilt the pot towards the spout by placing a stick under the pot. Just an inch or two is enough. Wait for about minutes. This will allow the coffee to cool slowly and the grounds will settle at the bottom, on the spout side of the pot.
Both work but based on the temperature outside, and how long you want your coffee to continue to brew will determine which method you use. The longer the grounds are in the coffee, the more of a chance for your coffee to be over cooked or bitter.
